7 Great Mistakes You Need to Make for Yourself
7 Great Mistakes You Need to Make for Yourself 7 Great Mistakes You Need to Make for Yourself Iâve been out of sync with the world lately. For the last few weeks (which means much longer), Iâve battled through each day. As wonderful as my life is, I struggle just like you do. No one escapes the occasional rough patch here and there. Some stretches seem catastrophic. Others, like my current one, appear to invade multiple aspects of my life no matter how healthy, vibrant, successful, or perfect any of them seem at a given moment. My swimming strokes donât have that usual effortless cadence. For some strange reason, Iâve been too-frequently bumping my bad elbow on the wall corners in my home. Iâve become overwhelmed by the important and unimportant to-dos on my desk. Worst of all, I havenât been catching those breaks that typically make an appearance with some level of frequency. Instead of fighting these bad vibrations and unforced errors, I thought Iâd embrace them. Iâve heard singers and songwriters share stories regarding how they produce their best songs when they channel their pain. Well, I canât carry a tune to save my life, but I can write. I thought why not just go with that? What are some of the greatest, most painful mistakes Iâve ever made? Here are a few of my self-inflicted dooziesâ"the ones you simply canât simulate from someone elseâs translation. Iâve titled it 7 Great âMistakesâ You Need to Make for Yourself. Feel free to hurry up and make them. The sooner you do, the more time youâll have to enjoy life! Is âtrustâ a four or five letter word? Trust someoneâs opinion other than your own. Iâm sure youâve forgotten every time you trusted someone elseâs alternate opinion only to discover you were correct. Didnât think so. Youâll have better fortune if youâre committed to your own thoughts and direction even if youâre headed in the wrong direction. Itâs a metaphysical law. This quote from Mansfield Park by Jane Austen comes to mind. âWe have all a better guide in ourselves, if we would attend to it, than any other person can be.â Pick-up game anyone? Fail miserably. Fail in such horrific fashion thereâll be no mistaking you should ever try it again. When embraced, the humiliation will become purifying and liberating. The slice of humble pie should be so large and awful it drives you straight to what you were born to do. Think Michael Jordan trying-to-play-baseball awful: 127 Games, .202 Batting Average, 114 Strike Outs, and 11 Errors. This eye-cringing effort drove His Airness right back to the basketball court where he belonged. He was so upset he launched Da Bulls to three more championships after he returned! Did someone say this was hard? Become successful with little effort. While youâre easily succeeding, this wonât appear a mistake. When examined in its wake, however, youâll understand only time reveals whatâs good or bad. Anything that comes too easily oftentimes results in one of two outcomes. It disappears as quickly as it occurred. The alternative is you disregard it because it came so easily. You havenât sacrificed enough effort to care. Think about that free gift you donât value nearly as much as something for which you paid $100. I love the Winston Churchill quote, âContinuous effortâ"not strength or intelligenceâ"is the key to unlocking your potential.â Money canât buy me love so who cares? Waste Money. Iâm not talking about getting nipped with ATM bank fees or eating out too often. I am referring to the I-shouldâve-just-lit-the-money-on-fire moments. Last year, my wife and I were in a car dealership when a woman walked in. She wanted to return the (brand) new car she purchased a few weeks earlier because her husband was upset. Turns out she bought the same model he has and managed to choose the same color as well. (Iâm not clever enough to make this stuff up.) The dealer wanted to clip her for a few thousand dollars because she drove it out of the showroom. Canât wait for the kids to refresh Momâs memory of this story next time she tells them leaving their green beans untouched is wasteful. Value your hard-earned money. I never saw a deadline I didnât like. Work too much. By âtoo muchâ I mean you were so exhausted you fell asleep at your desk. It took an hour for the imprints to dissipate from your cheek thanks to face plant you did on your keyboard. You will never understand balance unless youâve been out of balance. My passion is my mission. Success is more like, uh, an intermission. Focus on success rather than your purpose. Youâre good at it. Maybe youâre even great at it. Your profession more than pays the bills. Youâve become accustomed to a lifestyle thanks to a career you donât love. You keep going through the motions even though your body feels like a shell with no soul. Sad. Youâre never as trapped as you think you are. A life lived with purpose trumps dollars any day. Check out How to Figure Out Your Purpose in Life in Fewer Than 600 Words and 7 Signs You Found Your Purpose. My passion is my mission. Success is more like, uh, an intermission. #milewalktips https://t.co/LDYwDcvP4S â" Andrew LaCivita (@arlacivita) March 6, 2016 Donât talk with your mouth full. Bite off more than you can chew. And, just keep chewing as fast as you possibly can. Expect some indigestion, but itâll pass. When youâre breathing properly again, youâll be greater for the wear and tear. Youâll likely have experiences that would have taken much longer to gain if you kept taking baby steps through life. Feel free to keep repeating this mistake, but make sure to chew first, swallow, and then breathe a bit⦠As always, I love to hear from you: What are your best and favorite mistakes? Salvaging the Summer - Copeland Coaching
Salvaging the Summer If youre in the middle of your college education, this pandemic could not come at a worse time. Youre trying to build up your resume to give you a chance of getting a job after graduation. And, youre going to need one with all of those student loans youll have to pay back. One way to do this is often through summer internships. But, the number of internships that have been cut is astonishing. When I was in college, I had the opportunity to have four internships. The first two were with General Motors. Then, I had one with Westinghouse and one with the Boys and Girls Clubs. Each one gave me experience and set me apart from my peers. But in graduate school, I was less lucky. I studied for my MBA during a time when the job market wasnt great. There werent as many internships available â" and the ones that were often expected you to work for free. So, I ended up not doing an internship during my MBA studies. What are you to do if you have found yourself without an internship this summer? Look for other ways to stand out. What else can you do with your summer that could be included on your resume? For example, are there opportunities to tutor other students online? Could you take additional courses? Perhaps you could volunteer to help a professor at your school with some of their research. Maybe you could teach yourself how to use a new kind of software. Perhaps you could volunteer to be an intern for a company. This idea may work in situations where the company cant afford to hire you, but is open to your help. I know this isnât an option for everyone, but if it is, consider it. Any of the ideas above will give you something that you can include on your resume. Speaking of your resume, this is the perfect time to work on yours. There are lots of tutorials online about how to craft a resume. And, while youre at it, set up your LinkedIn profile. Beyond this, another tactic I love is called informational interviewing. Informational interviews arent job interviews. Theyre networking meetings that allow you to chat with a professional about the work they do. For example, if youre studying computer programming, you might reach out to someone who is a computer scientist and ask them if they are willing to chat with you about their job. Many companies have slowed down, so there are some professionals who have extra time right now. Whatever you do, try to keep your head up. I know this is tough. When I graduated with a computer engineering degree, the dot com crash had just happened. I thought things would never get better. But, keep pushing ahead. Someday things will improve and you want to put yourself in the best position to succeed then. I hope these tips have helped you. Visit CopelandCoaching.com to find more tips to improve your job search. If I can be of assistance to you, donât hesitate to reach out to me here.
